Mike Mead: Head Cross Country Coach &
Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Alumni
Coach Mead is in his 25th season as the Lakers head coach. Prior to becoming a coach, Coach Mead earned his Bachelor's Degree in Speech and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of West Georgia. He was a stellar athlete competing on the West Georgia Cross Country team, which saw appearances at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in 1978-79. Coach Mead currently holds the record for the steeplechase (9:08.7), indoor mile (4:18), and the indoor two-mile (9:14). Coach Mead is also extremely active in the community. He serves on the board directors for the Good Shepherd Clinic and is a member of the Kiwanis Southlake Club. Coach Mead is known for building Clayton State's track and field program from scratch. Since its inception in 1997, a combined 18 All-Americans have been produced under this leadership. In the seven years that the Peach Belt Conference has sponsored outdoor track and field, Mead's teams have combined fro 69 All-PBC honors, 37 for the men and 32 for the women, as well as 16 individual league champions. As of December 2018, he is serving as an At-Large member of the USTFCCCA Board of Directors and has also accepted a two-year post as that organization's NCAA Division II Chairman.
